He was the sweetest soul and I am honored to have him share that with me for almost 20 years. I always thought of him as my special needs bird...He wasn't the smartest, bravest, the strongest willed but he managed to set the tone in so many ways in our flock. Bailey is lost without him and so am I.
Over the 20 years since I lost my first, I had somehow forgotten the feeling that comes when our fids move on and they take a piece of our hearts with them. My heart has two pieces missing and I feel it now again.
There is a poem which I've lost and cannot find anywhere but bird people know it: Just A Bird It has always closely mirrored my feelings for my little flock and I recall it now as I feel grateful that I have had Snickers guide me through good times and bad. He and Bailey remind me to live in the moment and that has been a most valuable lesson.
Fly free Snickers...you are smart, you are brave and you are loved.

"Just a bird" From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a bird," or, "that's a lot of money for just a bird." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a bird." Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a... bird." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a bird," but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a bird," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a bird" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day. If you, too, think it's "just a bird," then you will probably understand phases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise." "just a bird" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a bird" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of "just a bird" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So, for me and folks like me, it's not "just a bird" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just a bird" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a bird" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a human." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a bird." just smile, because they "just don't understand." Author unknown

I've never read "just a bird" before, Gina. It's beautiful and brought me to tears. I often say that God created birds so that angels could come down and be with us.

They are angels for sure. I have been beyond privileged to have three angels in my life.
Glad you liked "Just" A Bird. I tear up every time I read it.
I think the reason I couldn't find it again is because it was originally written as "Just" A Dog.
Very fitting for all of our fids as it see it.

It's just a bird that stole my heart forever. They may be tiny, some of them,b ut they inspire the greatest love. Snickers sounds like he was a very special angel birdie. They have such a way about them.. They touch our souls, and shine, there.

They sure do. I love that image: touching our souls and shining there.
